Florida Backyard Economics Campaign

Florida Governor Charlie Crist has joined businesses, chambers and associations from across the state to launch Florida’s Backyard Card incentive program to give Floridians another good reason to get out and support their local businesses. Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio will kick off the campaign locally on July 1st.

The Backyard Card program is a powerful marketing tool, which you can leverage to grow your business. Tap the benefits of widespread promotion of shopping incentives by a partnership that includes the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce, The City of Tampa, The Downtown Partnership, the Tampa Independent Business Association, and other local business groups. We need your help in populating the value offers on the web site.

Get started now by following the four steps below:

1. Print and display the attached promotional flyer in your business.

2. Add a value offer for your customers using this link:
http://floridabackyardcard.com/admin/?source=28hb8b29g3&type=nm

3. Once reviewed and approved, your value offer will show up on www.FloridaBackyardCard.com for people to find and use.

4. Keep updating and posting new values so you can attract more business. (You’ll receive a username and password once your first offer is reviewed.)

How it works:

§ Someone at the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce will review all value offers before they appear on www.FloridaBackyardCard.com

§ Consumers across the state will be urged to get a Florida Backyard Card, which will be available online and distributed by Florida Lottery retailers

§ The campaign will be heavily promoted across the state by the Florida Lottery as well as print and broadcast media partners

§ Consumers access the online searchable database to find the best values in their backyard

§ The campaign will continue into the fall. You will be able to use your unique user name and password to manage your account and change your special offers at any time

This campaign is similar to the highly successful campaign used to drive in-state tourism in the wake of the 9-11 terrorist attacks. This time, ALL Florida businesses can benefit from the statewide “spend at home” campaign.

The Office of Education is pleased to announce the availability of Ernest F.
Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship to current sophomores attending MSIs
majoring in disciplines related to oceanic and atmospheric science,
research, or technology, and supportive of the purposes of NOAA's programs
and mission, e.g., biological, social and physical sciences; mathematics;
engineering; science teacher education, science policy, and computer and
information sciences. For additional information and access to the
application, please visit http://www.oesd.noaa.gov/Hollings_info.html.

The application deadline is June 15, 2010. The application, all transcripts,
and two references must be received at NOAA by June 15.

Eligibility requirements are:

* US Citizenship
* 3.0 GPA
* Studying a NOAA science: atmospheric science, biology, cartography,
chemistry,
computer science, engineering, environmental science, geodesy,
geography, marine
science, mathematics, meteorology, oceanography, physical science,
science policy,
photogrammetry, physics, science teacher education, etc.

To date, the Hollings Scholarship Program has awarded 557 scholarships to
undergraduate students since its inception in FY 2005. Less than 5% of the
scholarships have been awarded to students from underrepresented communities
or to students attending Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs). The NOAA
Office of Education is making an effort to reverse this trend and create an
Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship Program that represents the diversity of the
American population. Since approximately 40% of minority students receive
their undergraduate degrees at MSIs, establishing recruitment efforts with
MSIs is an effective way to increase the number of students from
underrepresented communities who are trained and graduated in NOAA mission
sciences.

With such a limited pool of potential employees trained in NOAA-mission
sciences from underrepresented communities, it is important that NOAA seek
new ways to make students aware of the mission of the agency and the
opportunities for students to be trained in NOAA-mission sciences.
